INAMI: A WOOD CARVING ART GALLERY
BORN FROM THE TEMPLE CARVER’S CHISEL
The town of Inami was built by expert wood carvers whose magnificent craftsmanship has its roots in the rebuilding of Zuisenji Temple.
Wood carving studios and merchant homes line the stone-paved streets, and the air is filled with the resounding clanks of wooden mallets and the rich aromas of wood.
Carvings of figures including the Seven Lucky Gods and the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac can be found all around as if on display in an art gallery.
In spring, festival floats and lion dances decorated with Inami wood carvings parade through the streets in hopes of peace, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest.
The exceptional skill and artistry of Inami wood carving has earned it recognition throughout Japan. Inami is a stronghold of wood carving culture, and wood carving is at the heart of life in the town.
